6 Million UK Adults Own Crypto: Here’s What It Means for Traders
1 in 10 Brits (11%) — approximately 6 million people — now own cryptocurrency according to 2026 research. For UK retail traders, this continued adoption matters: it signals demand for regulated platforms, growing market maturity, and traders willing to navigate regulatory change.
The Numbers: 11% vs the FCA’s 8%
Two different ownership rates are circulating. Finder’s 2026 survey shows 11% of UK adults own crypto, while the FCA’s December 2025 research reported 8% of UK adults own crypto. The variation reflects different survey methods and timing, but both show a market stabilising around core committed traders.
The silver lining: the FCA notes a “shift toward higher average holdings” among those who remain invested, with mean value per holder rising to approximately £1,842 — suggesting committed traders are doubling down rather than exiting.
Bitcoin and Ethereum Lead
Among UK crypto investors, Bitcoin (BTC) is by far the most popular cryptocurrency in the UK at 37% ownership among current crypto investors, with Ethereum (ETH) owned by around 26%. These two assets dominate UK retail crypto exposure by a wide margin.
Who’s Buying: Age and Gender
Crypto ownership is highest among millennials (aged 29-44), with more than 1 in 5 millennials (22%) currently invested. A gender gap persists: 31% of men have invested in cryptocurrency, compared to just 17% of women.
The Regulatory Deadline: October 2027
All UK crypto firms face a hard deadline. The new cryptoasset regime is expected to come into force on 25 October 2027. Firms can apply for authorisation between 30 September 2026 and 28 February 2027.
For traders, this means two things: first, verify any platform you use with the FCA’s Firm Checker now. Second, understand that until the new rules come into effect in October 2027, the FCA’s oversight of crypto will continue to be limited to financial promotions and anti-money laundering controls — but the full regime is coming.
What Should You Do?
The UK crypto market is consolidating around serious traders and regulated platforms. If you’re thinking of entering the market or expanding your position, start with research: understand your risk tolerance, verify platform authorisation, and only trade with money you can afford to lose. The 11% adoption figure is not a prediction — it’s where we are now. The question for you is whether the current market and regulatory environment align with your investment goals.
