I have a mentoring session later today. It’s a new student who has been trading but is making some basic mistakes, but before any student gets time with me they have to watch a film.

The Big Short is a film about a group of investors that bet against the housing market, supposedly 100% rock solid. It shows some incredible trading, it shows traders going against the understood state of the market, going the extra mile in terms of working through their trades.
One thing I teach my students is how to listen. To hear things in the markets others miss. To watch to see, much like the quant in the film, things in charts and data that others may glance over without a care.
I’m on my 5th or 6th time watching this film. Make notes, watch how the banks and institutional traders work, how bad the regulators are and how the system completely collapses. Yes, this did actually happen. This film is education for traders.
