Mt. Gox Pushes Deadline to October 2026

Just 17 days stand between Mt. Gox creditors and another extended waiting period. According to CoinDesk, Mt. Gox has extended the creditor repayment deadline to October 31, 2026, from the previous deadline of October 31, 2025. The latest postponement marks the third delay since the exchange’s original October 2023 repayment target, leaving thousands of UK retail investors and traders caught in a decade-long compensation saga.

Who Has Been Repaid So Far

According to Crypto.news, about 19,500 creditors have received their repayments so far — those who met all conditions and faced no complications. However, this progress masks a much larger problem: the return of roughly $9 billion in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to an estimated 24,000 creditors depends entirely on whether the remaining claimants can complete required documentation.

Rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi wrote that many creditors still haven’t received their repayments because they “have not completed the necessary procedures,” while others faced issues during the process. According to Crypto.news reporting on the trustee’s statement, while the base, early lump-sum, and intermediate repayments have been largely completed for compliant creditors, “a considerable number” remain unpaid due to procedural lapses or technical issues.

What’s at Stake

According to CoinCentral, Mt. Gox currently holds 34,689 Bitcoin, worth roughly 4 billion dollars, awaiting distribution once all creditor claims are resolved. UK retail traders holding Mt. Gox claims face a critical decision: complete their pending procedures before October 31, 2026, or risk further delays.

According to Yahoo Finance reporting on the trustee’s 2021 announcement, efforts to recover the lost amount were set in motion back in 2021, when the Tokyo District Court approved Mt. Gox’s civil rehabilitation plan allowing creditors to recover a portion of the exchange’s remaining assets. The defunct exchange suffered a security breach and has been working to repay creditors with recovered assets.

What Traders Need to Do

If you hold a Mt. Gox claim, check your creditor status immediately at mtgox.com. The trustee’s latest update confirms that any incomplete procedures or unresolved verification issues could keep you waiting beyond October 2026. UK traders facing delays, disputes over claim amounts, or KYC complications may want to explore options like third-party claim recovery services that offer immediate liquidity rather than extended waiting.

This remains a drawn-out chapter for UK retail investors, many of whom lost life-changing sums when Mt. Gox collapsed. The October 31 deadline is real — but so is the likelihood of yet another extension, based on the trustee’s track record of three consecutive postponements.
